How to Find the Right Lubricant for Your Body

As a sex therapist, I recommend lubricant to almost everyone. Lubricant can decrease friction, reduce discomfort, support arousal, and often increase pleasure. Even people who produce plenty of natural lubrication often report that sex feels smoother, more comfortable, and more pleasurable with added lube.

Choosing the right lubricant can feel confusing because there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Bodies, skin sensitivities, hormones, microbiomes, medications, and preferences all vary. What feels incredible for one person may feel irritating for another.

This guide will help you navigate the main types of lubricants and how to choose the right one for you.

The 3 Main Types of Lubricant

Water-Based Lubricants 💦

Water-based lubricants are the most common and often the easiest place to start. They usually contain:

  • Water

  • Glycerin and/or cellulose

  • Propylene glycol or propanediol (humectants)

Some formulas also include soothing ingredients like aloe vera or hyaluronic acid.

Benefits

  • Hydrate the skin

  • Feel lightweight

  • Less messy

  • Easy to wash off

  • Compatible with most condoms and toys

Downsides

  • Absorb into the skin quickly

  • May need reapplication

  • Do not seal moisture into the skin

Many people with sensitive tissue prefer water-based or hybrid lubricants. Examples include Sutil Luxe, Slippery Stuff Gel, and Good Clean Love.

Hybrid Lubricants 💧✨

Hybrid lubricants combine mostly water-based ingredients with a small amount of silicone, usually around 10–12%. This mix offers a balance between the light feel of water-based lubes and the long-lasting glide of silicone.

Benefits

  • Longer-lasting than pure water-based lubes

  • Less sticky than pure silicone lubes

  • Compatible with most condoms and many toys

Downsides

  • May not be suitable for very sensitive skin

  • Silicone content can affect some silicone toys

Hybrids are a great choice if you want something that lasts longer but still washes off easily. Example: Oasis Silk

Silicone-Based Lubricants

Silicone-based lubricants are made from silicone oils and do not contain water. They provide a very smooth, slippery feel that lasts much longer than water-based lubes.

Benefits

  • Long-lasting, no need for frequent reapplication

  • Waterproof, ideal for shower or bath use

  • Very smooth texture

Downsides

  • Can be harder to wash off

  • May damage silicone toys

  • Some people find them too slippery or heavy

Silicone lubes work well for people who want a durable lubricant or who experience dryness that water-based lubes cannot address. Example: Uberlube

How to Choose the Right Lubricant for Your Body

Consider Your Body’s Needs

  • Sensitive skin or allergies: Water-based lubes with minimal additives or hybrid lubricants are usually best. Avoid glycerin if you are prone to yeast infections.

  • Dryness or hormonal changes: Silicone lubes or hybrids can provide longer-lasting moisture.

  • Toy use: Check compatibility. Water-based lubes are safe with all toys, while silicone lubes can damage silicone toys.

  • Condom use: Water-based and hybrid lubes are safe with latex and polyisoprene condoms. Avoid oil-based lubes with latex condoms.

Pay Attention to Symptoms

If you experience discomfort, burning, or irritation, stop using the lubricant and try a different formula. Some people react to glycerin or parabens, so look for products labeled hypoallergenic or free from these ingredients.

Try and Observe

Finding the right lubricant often requires testing a few options. Start with small amounts and notice how your body responds. Keep track of what feels good and what causes irritation.

Additional Tips for Using Lubricant

  • Apply lubricant generously to reduce friction and increase comfort.

  • Reapply as needed, especially with water-based lubes.

  • Store lubricants in a cool, dry place to maintain quality.

  • Avoid sharing lubricants between partners to reduce infection risk.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right lubricant is a personal journey. Your body, preferences, and activities all influence what will work best. Start with water-based lubes if you are unsure, then explore hybrids or silicone options based on your needs. Remember, lubricant is not a sign of a problem but a way to enhance comfort and pleasure.

Experiment with different types and brands until you find your perfect match. Your body will thank you for the extra care and attention.
